Yes, the title to this story is apt because recently a member of Tamil Nadu State’s Electricity Board was found playing online rummy on his mobile phone while the farmers expressed their grievances in the rarely occurred farmer’s grievance meeting at the local collectorate in Villupuram.
Online Rummy games in India are growing at an accelerated speed with every day more as more and more players are signing up by paying a very meagre amount as registration charge aiming to win a huge amount. The growing interest in the game of rummy was witnessed in the meeting comprising over 300 farmers, many representatives of farmers’ welfare association and 100 government officials. During the session, while the farmers kept on making pleas the officials, if not already asleep or talking over the phone or streaming Hotstar, are seen stuck on their phones playing games and paying no heed to the concerns raised by the farmers. Still wonder, why farmers commit suicides when they don’t get adequate resources to make a living?
The meeting which was chaired by Collector Dr L Subramanian, along with District Revenue Officer R Priya and Agriculture Department Deputy Director Selvaraj, at the collectorate on Friday, if the reports are to be taken into account.
A few media personnel spotted an official watching video and another playing rummy on their phones. A journalist even filmed the official who was ‘playing his cards very carefully’. The district administration at first refused to reveal the officer’s identity, but after a tv channel showed the footage repeatedly, the administration revealed the identity of the official. Later, District Electricity Board chief engineer identified the erring official as TNEB executive engineer Sadhasivam attached to the Tindivanam zone. The Electricity Board sent summons to the officer on Saturday and demanded an explanation his act. Sources say the official might present his explanation soon.
