PokerStars started facing some disruptions in their operation on the night of August 12, 2018. Their players got disconnected from the tables and as a result all the ongoing tournaments across the world had to be cancelled. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks also caused site outages in major networks till August 15, 2018. However, the issue has been resolved soon after that and almost all players were issued refunds.
To make up for the inconvenience caused to their users by the DDoS attacks, PokerStars went a step further and announced free rolls across it major markets around the globe. A total amount of $650,000 will be given away in free rolls in the form of tournament passes. Though, an official notice is yet to be made by the organization, it is believed that these free rolls can be found in the poker clients who have access to global player pool and the separate Southern European network excluding Portugal and only to shortlisted Italian players.
Five free rolls will run each day starting from August 22, 2018 till August 26, 2018 in the global player pool. Each free roll will be distributed as $100,000 in prizes. Players in the European player pool will have access to free rolls worth € 20,000 and players in the Italian player pool will get free rolls worth € 10,000. However, these free rolls will only be applicable for those players who were playing real money games during August 12 to August 14. All those players will be given three tickets, which can be used up to three times to enter a Players Free roll, each which would also be credited to their accounts in no time.
The free-roll award passes will let the players take part in major upcoming tournaments in their areas. For the European market, the players can compete in the Galactic Series. In the dot-com domain, the players can take part in the World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP), so far no tournaments have been announced for the segregated Italian clients.
However, it was surprising to find out that the poker group has announced anywhere regarding the players in India or New Jersey of free rolls. There have been numerous reports that players in both these regions were affected by the DDoS attacks but PokerStars kept mum on that. Portugal and Czech Republic got deprived of their free rolls because of the poker group and the country’s regulations that prevent them from giving away free rolls at any cost.
