After enjoying a plethora of success in the shortest format of the game where they whitewashed both Australia and New Zealand 3-0, Pakistan will look to emulate their performance as the focus now shifts to the ODI series with the first match set to be played on Wednesday.
Unlike the T20Is, Pakistan’s form in the 50-over format has been pretty dismal off-late. Their last bilateral ODI series win against a top-five ranked sides came way back in 2015 where they defeated the Lankans 3-2.
Barring the Zimbabwe series, they have proceeded to lose 0-5 to the BlackCaps earlier this year and followed it with an insipid Asia Cup campaign where the Sarfaraz-led unit was humbled twice by arch-rivals India and failed to make to the Finals after losing to Bangladesh in a do-or-die encounter. Part of Pakistan’s problem in the Asia Cup was the failure of their top-3. Pakistan relies heavily on the troika of Fakhar, Imam and Babar Azam. Fakhar had a forgettable Asia Cup while Imam failed the scoreboard ticking in the first ten overs which put additional pressure on the middle-order.
The inclusion of Mohammad Hafeez is set to bolster their middle-order while the addition of Junaid Khan, who impressed in his only outing in the Asia Cup will give their fast bowling a much-needed potency; something that was missing in the Asia Cup. Shadab Khan too had a lacklustre Asia Cup but has since then bowled admirably in the recently concluded T20UI series, and is expected to play a key role on the slow pitches of the UAE.

New Zealand’s problem in the T20I series was their penchant for middle-order collapses against the spin and Ross Taylor’s lack of runs played a huge role in that. Taylor has been the cornerstone of the ODI set-up for a better part of five years. The right-hander has scored 13 hundred since the start of 2013 and New Zealand will hope that their talisman shrugs off his indifferent form.
Williamson & co will be relieved that Trent Boult will make his way back into the unit after missing out on the T20 series due to family commitments. The inclusion of Boult will certainly add potency to the attack that had struggled (Tim Southee & Co) in the T20 Internationals.
