The Big Picture

With the Group-stage done and dusted, the caravan of the ACC Emerging Nations Asia Cup moves to its business with India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh vying to book their place in the summit clash. The second semi-final could not get any better. No matter at which level, the tournament is being played, India vs Pakistan is always a high-stakes encounter with plenty riding on the outcome of the result. It, being a semi-final like it is, this time around accentuates things further. But with pressure comes an opportunity to become a star. The second semi-final at Colombo will give the aforementioned opportunity to both India and Pakistan colts.

How have the teams fared in the Group-stage

India, on expected lines, had a flawless campaign in the Group stage courtsey comprehensive victories over Oman [six wickets], Afghanistan [74 runs] and Sri Lanka [four wickets]. The batting department has been spearheaded by Himmat Singh [1 fifty, 1 hundred], Deepak Hooda [1 hundred] and Ruturaj Gaikwad [67 vs Sri Lanka] while the du of Jayant Yadav and Mayank Markande have managed to spin a web around the opposition batsmen, abely supported by fast bowlers in Shivam Mavi and Ankit Rajpoot. Pakistan, on the other hand, suffered a blip in the last game against Bangladesh courtesy a lacklustre batting effort that saw them get bowled out for 225 after Bangladesh had set 5-309 in 50 overs. Pakistan’s loss can also be put down to them resting Shahibzada Farhan. The opener has scored two hundred in the tournament thus far, and with him coming back into the team for the semi-finals will add potency to their batting unit which already boasts of Rizwan, Ali Imran and all-rounder Khushdil Shah. Muhammad Rizwan has been in good form lately. The wicket-keeper batsmen scored 46 in the last game while Ankush Bains scored a pristine 83 against Oman to cap off the run-chase. Picking either of them will be prudent.
