Becoming the sixth side to defend their Ranji title, Gujarat has won five out of their six games in this year’s round-robin format of Ranji Trophy to finish on the first spot in Group B. Led by veteran Parthiv Patel; Gujarat has scored staggering 34 points in six games. It is the highest among all groups. This season has been quite good for Gujarat so far. Their decision to rope in Piyush Chawla from Uttar Pradesh team has helped them a lot. The leg-spinner has grabbed 31 wickets in five matches he has played and has much more to do. Priyank Panchal is in brilliant touch with the bat. It seems he has started off this season where he had left the previous one. This right-handed all-rounder has scored 538 runs at a mind-blowing average of 67.25.
On the other hand, Bengal’s Ashok Dinda too seems to have chosen the path of Piyush Chawla. Dinda has 30 victims against his name which also includes a 10-wicket haul. Although Bengal didn’t have many wins in this season, the Manoj Tiwary-led side performed spectacularly against star-studded Punjab and eventually made its way into the quarter-finals. Youngsters like Abhishek Raman and Ishan Porel have played vital roles in their team’s success and would play a key role in the 1st quarterfinal against Gujarat scheduled at Sawai Mansingh, Jaipur.
