England vs India 4th Test Match Preview

After a week long break, England and India will resume what has been a highly intriguing series thus far when the teams lock horns for the fourth Test at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on Thursday.

Venue:- The Ageas Bowl, Southampton

Match Timings:- Thursday, August 30th, 2018, 03:30 PM IST

After suffering a hounding by an innings & 159 runs at Lord’s, India came back valiantly at Nottingham to register a 203-run win. It was the Indian opener’s who finally managed to put fifty-plus stands in both innings- only the 4th instance that India’s openers managed the feat in overseas conditions, that helped India’s middle-order courtsey Virat Kohli (97) and Ajinkya Rahane (81) to set-up 329 in the first innings.

All the questions surrounding Hardik Pandya’s role in the team were then squashed by the Indian all-rounder as he ran through England’s batting line-up to claim his first 5-wicket haul in Test cricket. Virat Kohli was at it again in the second innings, as he (103) and Cheteshwar Pujara (72) batted England out of the game to post 520 for victory.

Hosts England, biggest nemesis has been their opening combination. Keaton Jennings, with his repeated failures (94 runs at 18.80) and Alastair Cook’s barren run-of-form on either side of his double hundreds (80 runs in six innings) have been unable to give their team a steady start thus exposing their middle-order.

Joe Root, after his half-century in the first innings at Edgbaston, looked a pale shadow of himself at Nottingham especially against Jasprit Bumrah and it was only Jos Buttler’s defining hundred in the second innings that saved the host from the blemishes after they were reduced for 4-63. Jonny Bairstow recovery from injury will come as a sigh of relief for Joe Root’s side, who’ll feature in the team as a specialist batsman with Jos Buttler taking up the wicket-keeping duties.

England will be buoyed by their record against India at Southampton; they’d defeated the Men in Blue by 266 runs last time around after taking a pounding at Lord’s in 2014. At that time, Cook stood up after a barren run-of-form that had preceded the Test (no hundred and an average hovering in the 20s at the time). Cook did that in 2014, he needs to do it again, tomorrow.
