Ford Trophy, 2018
Central Districts vs Northern Knights, 7th Match | CD vs NK WHO WILL WIN
As the caravan of the 2018 Ford Trophy rolls on, Central Districts will take on Northern Knights as both sides aim to get their fledgeling campaign back on track.
After securing a 37-run win in the first match, Central Districts succumbed to a five-wicket defeat at the hands of Canterbury in the last game.
Insipid batting effort was at the heart of Districts’ loss against Canterbury. Put into bat, Districts lost wickets at regular intervals as Will Williams (4-34) and Theo van Woerkom (2-3) ran through their top-order to bowl them out for a poultry 163 in 43.4 overs. Greg Hay and Christian Leopard were the joint top-run scorers with 29.
Defending 164, Doug Bracewell (2-25) and Christian Leopard (1-24) claimed two early wickets but a pristine 84-ball-73 by Tom Latham meant the target was chased down with ease in the 36th over.
If the two-wicket loss to Auckland Aces in the first game was heartbreaking, Northern Districts succumbed to a chastening nine-wicket loss at the hands of Otago.
Just like their opponents, Knights’ insipid batting effort was at the heart of their defeat against Otago. Batting first, their top-order failed to get going against Jacob Duffy (4-29) and Warren Burnes (2-42) and at one stage looked prime to get bowled out under 100.
Ultimately, all-rounder, Daryll Mitchell displayed some grit with a 109-ball-76 and along with Brett Hampton (33) to forge a 75-run stand to steady their dwindling ship. But the wicket of Hampton triggered yet another collapse to eventually get bowled out for 179 in 44.4 overs.
If their batting was insipid, Northern Knights’ bowling was appalling as Hamish Rutherford stroked an impeccable 102 off 125 balls to guide his side to a nine-wicket win.
With both teams losing their last encounter comprehensively, tomorrow’s encounter promises to be a crucial one as they aim to address their batting issues- a pivotal reason in their loss in the last game.
