India literally snatched the last encounter from the hands of Australia and the last over thrill was the real icing on the cake from rookie Vijay Shankar. The Paytm series caravan’s next stop is the hometown of one of India’s favourite sons MS Dhoni’s i.e Ranchi where the hosts will look to seal the series whereas, the visitors would be aiming to keep the series alive.
After losing the toss, Aaron Finch asked Virat Kohli’s men to have a go with the bat. Indian openers who haven’t produced any good so far in both T20Is and the last 2 ODIs once again perished cheaply inside 9 overs. India were reeling after a pendulum kind of start that is when skipper Virat Kohli rose to the occasion.
Virat tried to steady the innings by himself at first, but then found an able ally in Vijay Shankar and the duo snared a vital 81 runs stand for the 4th wicket before an unfortunate run-out cut short Vijay Shankar’s innings of 46 runs.
Just after his departure, India lost 2 quick wickets as the heroes of the first ODI MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav were back to the pavilion soon. Virat was still holding one end and he knew he had to be there to get his team to a respectable total. From thereon, he played almost a lone hand and like structured his innings magnificently to reach his 40th ODI ton in just 216 innings.
In the process, he also completed 9000 international runs as skipper for India and became the fastest to do so. His innings of 116 runs from 120 deliveries included 10 fours came under pressure and the pouring heat of Nagpur took some extraordinary effort from him to reach the milestone.
After an unfortunate run-out in the first innings, Vijay Shankar did not had the best of the games with the ball in the second innings as he went for 13 runs in his opening over which included 3 fours.
Skipper Kohli did some calculations to take the game right till the last over and was left with a choice of Vijay Shankar and Kedar Jadhav to bowl the penultimate over. Kohli showed confidence in Vijay Shankar’s seam-up deliveries and the risk definitely paid off.
He dismissed the well-set Marcus Stoinis on the very first ball of the last over and then wrapped up the last wicket of Adam Zampa to hand India a 2-0 lead in the 5 match series.
