After an entertaining white-ball cricket series, Afghanistan and Ireland square off in Test arena at Dehradun on Tuesday. The two nations earned test status in 2018, with Ireland making their debut at home versus Pakistan while Afghanistan stepped into the red-ball cricket against India in Bangalore. Since the first appearance didn’t help either side get a win, this will be the opportunity before two nations to record their first Test victory.
Afghanistan welcomed Ireland to India with a 3-0 drubbing in the Twenty 20 format. The disparity between the two sides was massive and it seemed that it will be a long tour for Ireland. However, Ireland pulled things back in the 50-over format to draw the five-match ODI series 2-2.
On the match-eve, Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan said: “It is a moment of pride that Afghanistan hosts its first Test match and it carries a lot of meaning for us. Although, we lost our inaugural Test match to India last year but we will aim to play in the upcoming Test match with full strength.”
Ireland captain William Porterfield also addressed the press conference said: “First and foremost, it will be completely different conditions [in the Test match] – our first Test match against Pakistan was a home game in Malahide in May whereas we are in Dehradun here in India in March. We will see how the pitch is in the next couple of days and expect it not to be very different.”
Pitch & conditions: The pitch has turned square in the last ODI played here. It could well be a similar wicket with a lot of turn in it.
