The Police department raided a house in Ishwar Krupa Society, Lambe Hanuman Road where they found Nayna Visavadiya, 38, and six other women gambling on playing cards on Wednesday. INR 17,300 cash was also found from the spot. The police arrested all the seven accused women for gambling.
Visavadiya, the accused, was running the gambling den at her residence. She had invited others to join and participate. Police found that the women have gathered at the spot specifically for gambling. Many of them belong to same society, Ishwar Krupa society. The police department thinks that the women used to gather at the same place regularly.
The Law of the state of Gujarat strictly bans gambling. There have been efforts to reform and amend these laws. In a similar attempt, a proposal was made to the Parliament in 2010 to legalise all forms of gambling in the state and turn it into the next ‘Las Vegas’. The proposal was rejected after a week.
Gambling is considered a rather controversial issue in Gujarat as it is the state of Mahatma Gandhi. However controversial or strict laws are introduced, gambling remains enormously popular with people.
