What is Kalyan Satta Matka?

By Dheeraj Singh @thakurdrajsingh

Satta Matka has a long history. In India, it originated before independence. In true sense, the game involved betting on the opening and closing rates of cotton as transmitted from the New York Cotton Exchange to the Bombay Cotton Exchange via teleprinters. However after 1961 when New York Cotton Exchange stopped exporting cotton, Satta matka underwent a lot of changes and now has become a game where people get the chance to win unlimited money through betting on random number selection.

The modern-day matka satta is a game in which players have to pick the right number to win the game. The winner becomes Satta King and gets all the money as prize. Boss Matka, Delhi King, Kuber Matta, Mana Mumbai Matka, Guru Delhi, Indian Matsa, Vaat Matka, Kuber Matta, Super De Matka, Madhur Matka, Gali Dasavar, Kalyan Matka, Mayapuri, Black Satta, and Mumbai Morning are some of the most common current day matka games being played in different parts of India.

The two most common and famous are – Kalyan matka and Worli matka.

Kalyan Satta Matka-

In 1960s, Kalyanji Bhagat, a farmer from Ratadia, Ganes Wala, Kutch, Gujarat, is said to have pioneered the matka gambling in Mumbai’s Worli. In 1941, Kalyanji immigrated to Mumbai (then Bombay) and did odd jobs for livelihood. By 1960s, Kalyanji was running a grocery shop in his building Vinod Mahal, in Worli and started accepting bets based on the opening and closing rates of cotton traded on the New York wholesale market in 1962. Thus, pioneered Mumbai’s first matka business.

Worli Matka-

In 1964, another matka business started in the bustling business area of Dhanji Street in Mumbadevi. Started by Rattan Khatri-the matka king, it gradually became a big gambling hub. It is said that Khatri controlled a nationwide illegal gambling network with international connections during 1960s -1990s which involved several lakh punters and dealt with crores of rupees.

There were slight modifications in the rules of both the games. While Kalyan matka ran for all days of the week, Rattan Khatri’s matka was only practiced Monday to Friday i.e., 5 days a week.

During the period when the textile mills flourished in Mumbai, lakhs of mill workers got attracted to matka gambling.  Several bookies saw this as a golden opportunity and opened their shops near the mills. And, this resulted in making Central Mumbai a hub of the gambling business. In the 1980s and 1990s, when the matka business was at it’s all time high, over Rs500 crore would be laid as bet every month. However, for the last couple of years the average monthly turnover of matka business has remained around Rs100 crore.

Modern-day matka-
