Mumbai crime branch busted a cricket betting racket on Friday night and arrested three bookies, involved in accepting bets on the one-day international match between India and Sri Lanka, from an office in D N Nagar, Andheri. According to the police, the bookies have links in Delhi, Ahmedabad and even in Dubai.
The unit 9 of the crime branch raided a commercial building, following a tip-off, where three people, including Deepak Ravi Kapoor, Tarun Sunny Thakur and his cousin Sunny Ashok Thakur were arrested.
According to the police, Kapoor was a small time punter before taking up the bookie business full-time. Kapoor runs a real estate consultancy as a front and is the kingpin of the betting gang. In all the police have seized 13 cell phones, two laptops, a diary with client details, computers and around INR 74,000 in cash.
All the three accused are booked under the Gambling Act and for forgery as they had 13 mobiles and SIM cards in their possession, which were registered under someone else’s name.
As per the reports the Defence lawyer, Mane Shinde claimed that all the SIM cards belonged to Kapoor’s employees. The sources have however said the accused were taking bets from punters and dealing with his counterparts in Delhi and Ahmedabad. The police further added, “We’ve sought call detail reports to know as to who they were in touch with”.
